About Stage Director Alexander Titel

People’s Artist of Russia (1999),
Laureate of State Prize of the USSR (1987), professor

Prof. TITEL is a graduate of The Russian University of Theatre Arts (GITIS), operatic direction class of Lev MIKHAILOV, People’s Artist of the Russian Socialist Republic (1980).

After graduation Prof. TITEL was invited to take the position of the Principal Stage Director of the Sverdlovsk (at present Ekaterinburg) State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre where he worked during 11 theatrical seasons. Boris Godunov by M. MUSORGSKY, The Prophet by V. A. KOBEKIN, The Hoffman’s Fairy Tales by J. OFFENBACH were the best productions created by the stage director Alexander TITEL and conductor Eugene BRAZHNIK on the stage of that theatre.

Alexander TITEL has been Artistic Director and Principal Stage Director of the Opera Company at The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Musical Theatre since 1991.

His operatic productions La Boheme by G. PUCCINI (1997), Così fan tutte by W. A. MOZART (2007), The Hamlet (The Danish) (Russian) Comedy by V. KOBEKIN (2010) got National Theatrical Awards 'The Golden Mask' for the best stage direction (1997, 2007, 2010).

Alexander TITEL has put up more than 50 productions in total, both in Russia and abroad. One can name a number of Russian operatic classical productions, such as Ruslan and Lyudmila by M. GLINKA, The Tale of the Tsar Saltan, The Golden Cockerel, May Night, Christmas Eve by N. RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, Eugene Onegin by P. TCHAIKOVSKY, Katerina Izmailova by D. SHOSTAKOVICH, Betrothal in a Monastery, The Gambler, War and Peace by S. PROKOFIEV and masterpieces by western composers, namely The Barber of Seville by G. ROSSINI, La Traviata, Ernani and Nabucco by G. VERDI, La Boheme by G. PUCCINI, The Bat by J. STRAUSS, Cavalleria Rusticana by P. MASCAGNI, Pagliacci by R. LEONCAVALLO, Carmen by G. BIZET etc.

Alexander TITEL has been actively involved in teaching at the Musical Theatre Faculty of The Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) since 1992. The productions put up by the Academy graduates under his supervision have been included into the repertoire of the Moscow Academic Musical Theatre.
